Karolina Mask
I shot this mask in a botanical garden, since it gave me an archaic prehistorical feeling. While shooting, I more and more got the feeling that the story I wanted to tell was of me observing, exploring and making snapshots of an animal in the wildlife.
I like the composition of the picture but
also the fact that it has movement. It looks like the mysterious animal
incidentally got caught on my camera. The flash reinforces that effect. The
textures of the background and my mask contrast well. I also find it humorous
how the 'ears' of the mask create a new face shape by lifting up the hair.

In these pictures I like
the glass and plants interacting with my masks. The last image has again a
similar snapshot look of somebody hiding.
This picture has a
purisitc feel due to skin, stone and plastic. I like how minimalist it is
drawing attention to the mask. The background sucks you in. In my point of view
it tells a similar story of me observing, exploring and finding this
‘prehistoric animal’.
I chose this
picture, because I really liked the perspective. It transforms the model’s face
shape while still disclosing details such as the mouth. But by isolating the
details and showing them through a ‘tunnel’ the viewer gets more estranged and
alienated from the face. The face distorts, transforms and does not look like a
‘familiar’ face anymore.
Here I experimented
how a natural environment interacts with the aesthetics of plastic. I liked the
different textural qualities of mask and environment: the bottle is reflective, smooth and see
through while the plant is more opaque and rough. I also liked how the colors
of the seemingly very different objects matched.
This picture is less
about my object being visible than about the picture itself. I like how the
steam within the mask relates to the blurry background.
