Hands Mask #Claudia
I decided
to try capture two people instead of one with this mask. Now you can see 11
hands on the image, even though four of them are the same two hands but from
two different perspectives.
I wanted the
images to be confusing and make the viewer feel deceived and intrigued: whose
are all these hands, why are they there, what are they trying to do, why are
these people concealing behind them.
This mask
is not only about identity but also about intimacy. The intimacy you share with
someone when you hold hands, the memory in our skin and our muscles and how you
can remember something by its texture, shape and size. I believe we can
recognize our close friends and family by their hands (identity), not only by
the look but if we would touch them and hold them with our eyes closed we would
still recognize them.
Furthermore,
the two people in these pictures are not holding hands and yet still you can
see and feel an aura of intimacy between and around them, created by the frame
of the picture (part of the body you can see on the left side of the picture),
the facial expressions concealed by the hands, the shy light and the body
positions.
About the
composition of the first two pictures:
I believe
it is a strong image that would become stronger by getting rid of some
background elements (like the lamp, iron board etc.) To my understanding the
hands have gained so much strength and personality that it has become a third “entity”
or character or even person because of its strong character and visuals.
The last
image is only to show how the mask looks on the other side back side of the
head.
These were
my firsts try outs, I am still working on my masks and all other assignments.
Please take this into consideration. I will send more pictures throughout this
week.
Nets Mask # Claudia
Net mask
First idea
was about making some sort of mask with food and fruits but this did not work out
since the fruits were not gluing to each other and I tried different methods to
stick them together but none of them work, that made me reflect and realize I shouldn’t
use such a precious and valuable item as food. But I still wanted to use the
nets in which mandarins and other fruits come. The food mask started as a comment
on ourselves and society, “we are what we eat”, something that I relate to and
that I am totally aware of but not everybody does.
These nets
represent the plastic we are constantly wrapping our foods with and the plastic
that we constantly eat without realizing. (Please if you would like me to elaborate more let me know I can
explain further, I do not know if I am supposed to give a big explanation or
not.)
I
experimented with the material and finally made a sheet with all the nets I had
gathered by melting them together with the iron. I am still exploring the
material since I have got more of this nets. I find it has similar qualities to
fabrics and thus I tried to use it as a sort of garment that would also cover
some part of the body and not only the mask, still being quite see through.
About the composition
of the pictures I can say that is not the final results and I am still working
on it.

Question Mark Mask
As I already said in class, I developed my own typeface for a question mark, from there a print for fabric and finally I made the fabric become real in the textile workshop. The images are of polyester fabric with the pattern printed by ink sublimation method. After looking at the fabric for a while and having encountered some production problems due to our new daily life I have decided to go back to the roots of this idea and pursue the image of just one big question mark. Again I will send you more pictures (or upload here) with my progres..
